Lime plaster has been used by artisans for centuries as a medium that creates both transformative and stunning qualities. Renowned for its durability, lime plaster adds value, durability, and beauty to a variety of living spaces. Popular styles among these finishes are Venetian plaster and diamond finish plaster. When properly installed, these finishes can yield a silky smooth, polished, and marble like appearance, or a smooth, semi-polished, and earthen quality, which greatly enhance and beautify any living space.

Diamond Finish Plaster

Diamond finish plaster is a lime-based product that is hand trowel applied to a wall. Most commonly, these finishes are produced by companies like Red Top or Structolite. The technique involves compression of the lime finish to render a polished appearance on the wall. Once applied to the wall, it is either burnished with a finish trowel or compressed with an index sized plastic card. The polished qualities of a diamond finish can be further enhanced with the application of bee’s wax.

Typically, the plaster is applied as a system utilizing metal lath, plaster base coat and lime finish. Diamond finish plaster can also be applied on drywall, and by using an interior bonding agent, plaster base coat, and lime finish.

Due to its labor intensive and time-consuming qualities for installation, diamond finish plaster is often applied during the construction phase of a project. It is possible, however, to render diamond finish plaster on existing structures. In comparison with other interior finishes, costs associated for the installation of diamond finish plaster can be much higher. This is because of its use of highly skilled labor and time-consuming installation. Yet given its natural and earthen qualities in appearance, it is hard to rival for its sheer beauty.

Venetian Plaster

Venetian plaster is an alternative lime-based product that has been used for centuries around the world.

Venetian plaster, unlike diamond finish plaster, does not require a prerequisite lath and plaster base coat as part of its assembly for installation. Many Venetian plaster finishes can simply be installed over finished drywall. The minimum requirements for its installation are an acrylic primer and finish. An exception to this rule is the application of a base coat applied prior to the installation of the Venetian plaster.

Venetian plaster is approximately an 1/8” or less in total thickness. The inclusion of marble dust in the lime plaster and burnishing of the finish with a Venetian finish trowel creates a plaster that resembles polished marble. This can be further enhanced with an application of hydro wax.
